We visited Iwate and Aomori for three days' tour from Hachimantai to Lake Towada, Oirase, Hakkoda Mountains and Shirakami-Sanchi (mountainous, unspoiled expanse of virgin forest), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At Oirase, where we had wanted to visit for a long time, we had a hiking of 5.6 miles along the Oirase Rapids enjoying autumn leaves which began to wear its colors and the energetic currents themselves and a variety of falls. At Lake Towada, we had a short walk in a drizzle along the lakeside to the Towada Shrine. An aerial tramway took us to the top of Mount Hakkoda with amazing views of seas of trees wearing various colored leaves. It really was brocade! On the last day, favored with occasional sunshine, we had a three hours' walk in the beech forest of Shirakami-Sanchi listening to the explanations of a special guide of the area.
Walking in nature more than two hours got us tired every day but we felt refreshed and enjoyed the visit very much.
